Sports Challenge Australia
DrinkWise Australia recognises the importance of building resilience in young Australians and providing them with the skills to make positive life choices. With appropriate support and by providing credible alternatives, we hope to ensure that risky behaviours, including alcohol misuse, can be reduced.
DrinkWise is proud to be working with Sports Challenge Australia on two positive change programs at Timber Creek (between Katherine and Kunanurra) and Ngukkur (east of Katherine) to promote healthy lifestyles to young indigenous people.
The Sports Challenge Action Model program aims to develop students lifeskills, improve fitness and sporting attributes, provide well-trained mentors and increase knowledge about healthy diets, lifestyle and positive choices. The program is achieving positive results, including a 10% improvement in lost days due to illness by students, a 19% improvement in student fitness levels, and the up-skilling of teachers through workshops and resources.
Feedback from student focus groups has shown the students are now looking forward to coming to school, feel better about themselves, feel healthier and interact better with their peers, teachers and family.
